Description of work undertaken during porting:
The aim of this work is to aid users of the VRE to communicate. The system is developed with NaradaBrokering, which supplies various services, including video conferencing and chat. Users will be able to subscribe to chat rooms, video feeds and view online user lists.
Chat portlet clients are based on IRC chat room concepts, using Java Messaging Service (JMS) topics. Video conferencing clients are built with the Java Media Framework (JMF). NaradaBrokering includes an RTP server based on the Global-MMC project and a JMS compliant broker.
Problems encountered:
A full report is available from /Sakai/papers/NB_Chat_and_Video_report.pdf. NB Chat and Video System documentation and details are available from http://acet.rdg.ac.uk/projects/vre/nbportlet.php
Ongoing support issues:
Tool use case:
Users and organisations alike require a tool to establish video conferencing sessions, without the multi-port or multicasting configurations, from within the VRE. The communication system is to provide a chat facility and video conferencing for groups of users, through a portal.
